Nestled in the characteristic rolling hills of the Sienese countryside—the Crete—lies a cottage called Calatine. It dates back to the 15-16th centuries. However, this name, with its Etruscan derivation, belies an even older origin; the valley where the cottage is located is rich with natural springs and it is likely that an Etruscan village called Calatine once existed there.
The cottage, surrounded by beautiful hills, offers its guests a stay in total relaxation, in the middle of an untouched landscape. Not far away, it is possible to find traces of the ancient Via Francigena, the road that in the middle ages connected Rome with France, going through Pienza.
The cottage is located close to San Giovanni d'Asso, a village considered to be the home of white truffle, and a good starting point to discover places of great historical and architectural importance, such as the medieval abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore (about 6 kilometres away), Pienza and Montalcino (with its well-known wine Brunello, about 20 kilometres away) and Siena (about 40 kilometres). Montisi is about 2 kilometres.
Calatine is located on farmland that is devoted to sheep breeding and cereal production. Its position in the valley offers an uninterrupted view to the south, with the changing seasonal colours, cornfields, woods, and flocks at pasture.
The house comprises two apartments recently restored with great care and respect for its original character. It is furnished to recreate both the atmosphere and the environment of the typical Sienese country house in the past.
For 4 persons: kitchen with balcony overlooking courtyard, hall with an old fireplace, 2 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with showers, independent heating system. Sofa beds available for children. Paved terrace with garden furniture and flowerbeds.
For 4 persons: Spacious kitchen giving on to a mown lawn with pergola, 2 double bedrooms, 1 bathroom with shower, independent heating system. Sofa beds available for children.
The whole house may be rented as a single unit with the possibility of accommodating up to 12 people comfortably.
The cottage is surrounded by its own private garden for the exclusive use of its guests, offering full privacy and peace. An old wood oven is available and a shared barbecue area, perfect for making pizzas or for roasting meats. This is especially enjoyable if you want to eat outside and dine on your terrace or beneath the vine-trellised pergola as the sun goes down.
How to get there: Calatine is located about halfway between Montisi and San Giovanni d'Asso, at the end of a gravel track to the south.
